Super mario 64 guide
(This will be added on in the future, it's not done right now)

General info

"Super Mario 64 is a platform game, developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development and published by Nintendo, for the Nintendo 64. Along with Pilotwings 64, it was one of the launch titles for the console."

"As one of the first three dimensional (3D) platform games, Super Mario 64 features free-roaming analog degrees of freedom, large open-ended areas, and true 3D polygons as opposed to two-dimensional (2D) sprites. It established a new archetype for the genre, much as Super Mario Bros. did for 2D sidescrolling platformers. Hailed as "revolutionary", the game left a lasting impression on 3D game design, particularly notable for its use of a dynamic camera system and the implementation of its analog control."

"In going from two to three dimensions, Super Mario 64 placed an emphasis on exploration within vast worlds that require the player to complete multiple diverse missions, replacing the linear obstacle courses of traditional platform games. While doing so, it managed to preserve many game-play elements and characters of earlier Mario games. The title is acclaimed by many critics and fans as one of the greatest and most revolutionary video games of all time."

Super Mario 64 in my opinion is one of 2 ultimate games on the Nintendo 64, with the other being Legend of Zelda; Ocarina of Time. Here i will attempt to show how to obtain every star in the game.

Pre-game

Once you start the game, you will see a letter by peach addressed to none other than Mario. A cut-scene of the Lakitu cameraman approaching will start, who controls what you see, and will tell Mario the basic controls. After you make your way to the bridge, Lakitu will tell you the camera controls. Enter the castle.

Mario will then hear an ominous laugh followed by an obvious message by bowser. Continue and enter the door on the left (the one that has no number on the star), then enter the painting.

Course 1 (Bob-Omb Battlefield)

Course 1, Star 1 (Big Bob-omb on the Summit)

The most basic level, and of course a classic. Who doesn't know the Bob-omb king Wink? Anyways once you start the level, you will drop into the middle of a war between good bob-ombs (pink) and bad bob-ombs (black). The game will tell you to talk to the nearest pink bob-omb, and he will tell you that this meadow has turned into a battlefield ever since the Bob-omb king got his hands on that power star, and he will ask you to get it for him. Follow the path from the pink bob-omb's cannon, up the wooden platform, past the chain-chomp, through the wooden see-saw, and continue towards the gate until you see the two (later three) black cannonballs rolling around. Dodge them both, and continue on the path up the mountain, while jumping over cannonballs rolling down the mountain. Once you reach the top of the mountain, go over to the bob-omb king and he will challenge you for the power star. The trick to this is to try and run behind him. Make sure you are standing still (or close to still) when you push B to pick him up, or you will just dive at him. If he starts to turn too quickly for you to run behind him, try to let him walk a couple of steps, then try running around him again. Overall, he shouldn't be hard to defeat, and your first power star should be yours quite easily. Hurray! One out of many many more to come.

Course 1, Star 2 (Footrace With Koopa the Quick)

One of the easier levels, all you have to do is run to the top of the mountain before Koopa does. When you start the level, you should talk to the first Bob-omb. He will tell you that although it is good that you were able to obtain the first star, there are many more to be obtained. He also recommends talking to his Bob-omb friends in the other levels. Go over and talk to the Bob-omb near the cannon. He will set up the cannon that you need. Although you won't need it for this level, you will need it for the other stars in the future. It is also recommended to find the Bob-omb and have him set up the cannon in the other paintings that you will go through. After you do all of this, go talk to the Koopa on the path that you would normally take to get to the top of the mountain. He will challenge you to a race to the top of the mountain. Accept his challenge. This star shouldn't be that difficult to obtain. Don't try to rush or you might mess up or fall down. He goes quite slow and generally, it shouldn't be hard. Don't try to follow the Koopa because he takes a harder path that is impossible for Mario to go through. This star should be yours quite easily.

Course 1, Star 3 (Shoot to the Island in the Sky)

This is the level where you need the cannon. Although it's not the only one, it'll help you with learning the cannon's physics (because there will be levels where your life will be on the line when you use the cannon). The goal of this level is to use a cannon to shoot to "the island in the sky". There are two cannons that you can use:

This one:

And this one:

I'm assuming that you know where these cannons are. This one is pretty self-explanatory. All I can do is help you locate the cannons. Some trial-and-error will occur, you should get it soon after a while. The star is in the yellow box if you didn't already know that Tongue

Course 1, Star 4 (Find the 8 Red Coins)

Red coins... yet another classic. Finding 8 red coins in the level is found in every painting. You'll be seeing a lot of these buddies, so get used to them. Here's the list of them:

1) Rotating wheel on the path to the bob-omb king
2) Small hill on the right field of the chain-chomp (when facing the cage)
3) On the chain-chomp's post
4) On the field to the left after the wooden see-saw
5) See 4
6) This one is sorta difficult to explain. You know the steel fence when you're on the way to the bob-omb king's hill? Well the platform right in front of the fence is where the red coin is. You have to go to the left of it (when facing the fence on the none-mountain side), and under it is a one-up mushroom and the red coin
7) Hill behind the steel fence, on the left of the rolling cannon-balls
(Tip, if you didn't already know if you push Z and move forward Mario will start to crawl (?). You can climb up hills that you normally would not be able to by doing this.)
8) On the top of the tree on the floating island in the sky.

Once you've collected all of the red coins, you will have to find the star (where it's located is indicated by the clear star under it) It's located on the field where red coins 4 and 5 are located.

Course 1, Star 5 (Mario Wings to the Sky)

NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE you must have the wing cap in order to complete this level. If you are going in absolute order then you can skip this level until you get the wing cap.

If you do have the wing cap already then you can complete this level. This one is similar to "shoot to the island in the sky" because I can't really explain how you do it. First you must shoot up onto the island in the sky, then you must grab the wing cap and jump into the cannon on the island. There will be coin circles in the air, and you must pass through the center of each circle in order to get the star. This will probably require a lot more trial-and-error than level 3 because you must go back and go through the circles that you missed. Once you go through all 5 coin rings, the star will pop up in the field where the red coin star popped up. Fly over there and grab it.

Course 1, Star 6 (Behind Chain-Chomps Gate)

Last star on the first course, Hurray! Anyways the last star is, as the title says, behind chain-chomp's gate. In order to get through the gate you will have to ground pound on chain-chomp's post 3 times and let him free. The big challenge here is to ground pound the post while avoiding chain-chomp's bites. If you're not careful you'll have to leave and find some coins to heal you health, as he takes away 3 health every times he bites you. A few tips to avoid biting him is to bring over a bob-omb and throw it at him, which will have him temporarily stunned, or you can wait until he lunges at you then try to ground pound 3 times on the post as quickly as possible. Both methods work fine, but once you ground pound the post 3 times, chain-chomp will be let go and a short cut-scene will be played showing chain-chomp destroying the gate before he leaves. Grab the last star in the course.

Course 2 (Whomp's Fortress)

Course 2, Star 1 (Chip off Whomp's Block)

The first star of the second course. Once you enter the painting a message will appear giving a hint about the Piranha Plant being woken if you are now careful around it. You can simply avoid the piranha's, but you can sneak around them if you'd like Wink. Jump up onto the hill on your right, avoid being knocked off by the "Stone things" (?) and jump over or wait and run though the shifting floors, and stop. You should be at the platform with thwomps on the stairs. Run into the corner (the one closer to the sign) and you will warp near the giant pole. If you need a one-up you can climb up the whole thing and handstand on the top for one, but otherwise carry on. Jump over the tiny fence and run towards the left, avoiding or destroying the whomp's that get in your way (*hint hint you should get familiar with the whomp's to have an edge over the boss, who is very similar to them). Climb on the platform and rise up onto the top of the Fortress. Here you will have a talk with the huge whomp that complain how people always disrespect floors, and proceeds to attempt to crush you. He is simply a larger form of a whomp and thus you can defeat him in the same way, by running in front of him and running away when he jumps up and falls, then ground pounding on his back. Do this three times and you have defeated him. He will make a (terrible) pun and you will get the star.

Course 2, Star 2 (To the Top of the Fortress)

This star will definitely test your jumping abilities, so don't be frustrated if you can't get this on the first try. First, go up to the top of the fortress the same way you did in the first star. You will notice that there is a change. Instead of the boss, there is a giant tower. To get the star, you must climb all of the platforms, and some of them will be shifting inwards and outwards. You can wait for each one to return out if it's in or you can try and rush through the whole thing. I suspect that most new players will fall a lot, don't worry, just collect some coins if you lose too much health. Once you get on the last platform, it will rise up. Jump onto the top and run around to find the second star.

Course 2, Star 3 (Shoot Into the Wild Blue)

Another cannon level, although this one is a little more difficult (even requiring me several tries to get it, although I'm not a pro here). Go on the same path you would normally go to get to the top of the fortress, and before you go through the warp, climb up the stairs and run down the other end. Collect some coins if you got crushed, but don't get too many. Talk to the pink bob-omb and have him open up the cannon. Jump into the cannon right next to him and aim and the smaller pole at the bottom (not the giant one at the top). Try to aim for the pole, because if you miss it, you could overshoot and end up going right through and dying. You will definitely drop several times, which is why you should keep some of the coins in the coin circle. Once you grab the pole, slide down and grab the star.

Course 2, Star 4 (Red Coins on the Floating Isle)

Your second red coin level Wink. Anyways here are the locations:

1) On top of the Stone pushers (whatever they're called

2) On top of the thwomp on the stairs

3) Next to the piranha plant on the right of the stairs (when climbing from the thwomp side)

4) On the narrow edge after continuing from the path of coin 3

5) On the rotating platform

6) On the hill below the rotating platform

7) On some floating platforms

(note, in order to get to the floating platforms, go to the top of the tower and kick over the wooden bridge (kick it once then while it's leaning toward the other side kick it again) then you can collect coins 6 and 7)

8) see 7

The star appears near the beginning of the stage, where the two flower patches are.

Course 2, Star 5 (Fall onto the Caged Island)

Remember how I said earlier that in some cannon levels your life will be on the line? Well, this is your first one. The "Caged island" is in the middle of the sky and if you miss, you will plummet and die. Ending the negative part of the tutorial make your way to the cannon that you used in "shoot into the wild blue" and jump in. If you tilt the cannon to the right, you will see a (tiny) cage in the middle of the sky. That's what your aiming at. Before you cross your fingers and try to make it, I suggest breaking the corner of the first wall (yeah you heard me. You can do that). Once that's done you're on your own. Keep trying till you make it. Good Luck!

Castle Secret Stars (in no particular order)

Star one (and two)

Once you get your first star, climb up the stairs in the main hall, make a right and enter the door. The window on the right is the one you can go through, and it has a secret slide in it. Complete the slide normally to get star one, then complete it in under 21 seconds to receive a bonus star.

Caps

Wing cap

Simply collect 10 stars in any order then look at the sun in the middle of the starting room (more specifically, the area you end up where you exit a course)

Invisibility cap

Just go into the basement (you need to defeat the first bowser in order to do so, which requires 8 stars in order to challenge him) and find the plain wooden door with no star on it. Swim through the water and ground pound the two pillars. All of the water will drain out and you can walk on the riverbed underneath the bridge to enter the castle. Find the hole in the ground and jump in it.

Metal cap

Go to the basement and enter the Hazy maze level. Find the room with the river monster, jump on the river monster and lead him to the red wire platform connected to the high ground. Jump onto it and enter the door. Run down the path and jump into the "portal"
